A Hard Rains A-Gonna Fall

When I left the house this morning I smelled something in the air that hasn’t been there in what seems like ages – moisture and humidity. And after a long lead up to this afternoon, the sky has just opened up and it is now PISSING down rain outside. The thunder, lightning, hail, [...]

No Witty Title Today

My sincerest apologies for my silence this week. I’ve been consumed by several 14-hour days leading up to a four-some of international web-based videoconferences, which I’m proud to say went off virtually without incident. I did have to get a bit creative when one of the participants was experiencing perhaps the worst echoes [...]

Hazelbrook RFB Stood Down

Extremely busy morning here so can’t write much, but I did just receive an email from the Hazelbrook Rural Fire Brigade with some good news on the progress of the fire fighters:
“The Hazelbrook Brigade was stood down yesterday afternoon. There is minimal activity on the main fire or the 2 spot fires. The latest information [...]

I’m buggered. The last 10 hours have been absolutely full-on. As I mentioned earlier, the conditions today were hideous. Winds whipping down the mountain fanned the monster downhill towards neighboring villages. This eventuated in two spot fires (at least) near Hazelbrook and Woodford Dam, which are right near us. [...]

Spot fires lit just down the mountain from us and gave us a good scare. This was taken from my rooftop. More to come.

The Howl Begets the Beast

Conditions are hideous today. I’m up before dawn for work every day and was greeted this morning by the howl of familiar winds coming up the valley. They’ve been worse than this granted – and have sounded like they’re going to tear our corrugated steel roof off – but under the circumstances the [...]

Fighting the Beast

For those of you who don’t know, there are two separate fires burning in the Blue Mountains right now – collectively they’ve taken around 14,500 hectares of remote bushland. They’re in inaccessible locations within a few kilometres of inhabited areas, meaning the fire brigades’ hands have been largely tied the last week. Both [...]
